We are sharing this advice as a preventative reminder to help everyone stay safe when using ATMs and cash machines. Incidents have recently been reported locally where criminals have targeted customers after their bank cards became trapped by a cash machine.

A recent local report involved a customer whose card was not immediately returned by a cash machine. After leaving the machine to seek assistance, the card was later found to be missing and was reportedly used shortly afterwards. This serves as a useful reminder to remain vigilant and contact your bank immediately if your card is retained.

Top Tips for Safe ATM Use

✅ Be aware of your surroundings

Take a moment to check who is nearby before using a cash machine.

Be cautious if anyone appears to be loitering close to the ATM or paying unusual attention to users.

✅ Protect your PIN

Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN.

Criminals may attempt to "shoulder surf" by watching you enter your PIN.

✅ If your card is not returned immediately

Contact your bank straight away on 159, the national hotline that connects you safely to your bank's fraud team.

Ask your bank to block or freeze the card until the situation is resolved.

Do not leave the location without reporting the incident if you believe your card may have been retained.

✅ Be wary of distractions

Fraudsters sometimes use distraction techniques to divert your attention.

Examples can include telling you that you have dropped money or pointing out an item on the ground.
